A Fact or Two
Build a kegerator and it will pay for itself by the time you've purchased three kegs. Kegs are cheaper than bottles, do not have preservatives found in bottled beer, and taste fresher. A keg holds 31 gallons or 14 cases of beer. A domestic keg averages $100; 14 cases of that same beer cost $280. You do the math!

Getting Started
Purchase an apartment-size refrigerator or a chest freezer, new for under $300 or used for as little as $50. Freezers must be measured carefully to insure proper fit of the conversion kit; add a temperature control to freezers to avoid freezing. Most popular kegerator kits mount through the refrigerator door.

Components of a standard kegerator kit are a CO2 tank, commercial double gauge CO2 regulator, 5/16-inch CO2 line assembly, a sankey lever handle coupler, 5 feet of beer line assembly, 5 1/8-inch shank with nipple assembly, beer tap, faucet knob, washers and a faucet wrench.

Towers and More
Tower kegerator kits (beer tap and components mount to the top of the kegerator) consist of CO2 tank, 1-4 beer taps/faucets and faucet draft tower, double gauge CO2 regulator, 5/16-inch CO2 line assembly, sankey lever handle coupler, faucet knob, washers and faucet wrench. Drip trays can be added to many kegerator models.

Kegerator kits come with complete instructions. You will need some simple tools to assemble.

• 1/8-inch drill bit
• Saw: hand or rotary
• 1-inch and 3-inch hole saws
• Screwdrivers: Phillips and flat heads
• Long nose pliers
• Level

Kegerators are for indoor use only. Refrigerators do not run well in hot outdoor temperatures. Keep a cleaning kit handy to clean lines, beer taps, couplers and drip trays monthly. A keg pump is a great backup if the CO2 cartridge runs out and should be cleaned after each use.
